Rest Day

Our day off from walking. We spent the day walking around Vindolanda, an archeological site. A site of numerous Roman forts dating back to 70 AD.

The first Fort was there before the Wall was started. It was the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire.

There were foundations for rooms such as barracks, workshops, granaries, the commander’s living quarters, temples, baths, and even latrines.

Digging is still going on. Volunteers come for two week sessions to help with the dig.

The volunteers are going through wheelbarrows of mud looking for bits of pottery, glass, or whatever objects may be in there. One volunteer said he found a small piece of pottery and some glass already that morning.

Looks like fun, right? There is also a great museum here (with cafe and coffee shop) displaying many of the objects found here.

An interesting site. Tomorrow, back to walking, a hilly 10 miles along the Wall.
